Few artists in Southern Gospel Music can boast of the thick, rich heritage the Inspirations possess. Founded in the depths of Western North Carolina, the musical heritage shared by a family produced a member that has taken music seriously for over 50 years. Music, like air, was vital to life growing up and even though Martin Cook pursued a degree in education, it was music that completed him and made him happy. The end result has surprised everyone, including him. "I never really anticipated music as a career. When I was growing up music was just something we got together and did because it was fun", states the founder of the Inspirations. When Martin Cook graduated from college to teach science and math, he had no idea he would create and manage one of the most successful groups in Southern Gospel Music. Now, four decades later, the Inspirations are a picture of originality and consistency. Few things have changed within the group over the years. An example of things that have not changed would be several of the faces. Martin Cook, founder and pianist, continues to be very involved on-stage and off. Martin takes a proactive role in the studio while recording, and also on-stage where he is still tinkling the ivories at every performance. Archie Watkins is another original member. His natural tenor voice continues to be one of the many defining characteristics of the Inspirations. Jack Laws is also still with the group playing guitar and providing the unique tonality that completes the classic harmony of the Inspirations. "I've come to love singing more than I ever have in the last couple of years. I feel like Southern Gospel Music is in the best shape its been in quite some time", says Archie with his characteristic grin. "There are more groups on the road than ever before, and there are also more people attending the concerts than there have ever been. As a result, there is more witnessing about the love of Jesus and what happiness He can bring to one's life. And most importantly, there are more people dedicating their lives to Jesus Christ because of the wide exposure of Southern Gospel Music. This is what it's all about." The remaining group members include Myron Cook, Mike Holcomb, Matt Dibler and Melton Campbell. Myron is the son of Martin Cook and plays the upright bass. Mike Holcomb sings bass and is one of two preachers within the group. Matt Dibler sings the lead and also preaches. Melton Campbell completes the group with his baritone voice and charming smile .
